Patio umbrella rib repair | step-by-step tutorial
The below tutorial shows how to fix a broken wooden umbrella rib; if your umbrella is made of metal, go directly to step 9 and use self drilling screws.

1- The rib is broken into 3 pieces, one of them still hanging to the central post of the umbrella while others got separated.
|
2- Get first some wood glue (also called white glue); it's available in the diy or stationery section of any supermarket and turns transparent when dry.
|
3- Use a 1" brush to pick some wood glue.
|
|
4- Spread a thick coat of wood glue on all the rib parts to be assembled.
|
5- Do not worry for any excess, it will turn transparent.
|
6- Have some C-clamps on hand.
|
|
7- Start assembling immediately the parts and fix with C-clamps. Tighten well.
|
8- The more you add C-clamps, the better it is.
|
9- You can wait 24 hours and go to step 14 or use this flat metal plate to finish the job in just an hour.
|
|
10- Wait an hour or a bit less.
|
11- Place the plate over the repaired area in a manner to match one of its holes withr the pin hole.
|
12- Use a screwdriver or better this cordless drill to drive screws into the plate. Be careful as the white glue is not set yet: it takes 24 hours to reach full strength.

13- Use all 3 screws but leave the pin hole clear.
|
14- Now cut the old pin's tail...
|
15- ...and remove it.
|
|
16- Use instead a 4 mm screw with a nut or simply a wooden screw to assemble again the rib to the spoke.
