BEFORE YOU START
  • Be careful not to touch any hot part of the engine.
  • For better results work on warm (but not hot) coils and preferably in a nice sunny day.

Ignition coil cleaning and insulating

Symptoms of leaking COP:
  • Ignition misfires are randomly occurring from time to time
  • This concerns in particular cylinders 2 and 3 in a 4-cyl engine
  • Occurs on cold or hot engine 
  • Occurs regardless of the COP condition i.e. could also affect a new coil 
  • Problem moves with the coil from cylinder to cylinder if the coil is moved
  • Generates ignition misfire codes
  • Eventually causes the ECU to stop the injector of the concerned cylinder
Some COP's can be removed with no tools unless you have to unscrew one bolt as shown here.
Take out all COP's.
Put them in a clean tray.
Wipe them with a clean and soft cloth especially the silicone boot (middle).
Clean also the interior of the coil boot (right).
Use a dielectric grease or oil to insulate your coils.
Make sure the silicone grease has good dielectric properties and high operating temperature.

Spray the coil boots with the dielectric silicone grease all around.
Spray also the interior of the coil boots but only the tip. Make sure not to spray any grease on the coil connector.
Leave the coils to dry in the sun for a few minutes prior to refitting them.

Defective spark plugs coils - How to inspect them

If the above symptoms are permanent, or, if the insulation of your ignition coils did not solve the issue, inspect well your coils and look for traces of burns at a particular point, like the ones shown here; then the concerned COP is defective and needs replacement and there's no use of insulating it.
The brownish trace of burn will show at the edge of the cylindrical metal part of the coil:
If you notice water on ore more of the ignition coils when removing them, then check the spark plug well (s) for water inside. If you find water, then this could be the cause of the above described symptoms and it will be necessary to fix the water ingress prior to insulating the coils (see further below):
